Hornit Clug and Clug Pro Review

Storing bikes has always been a challenge, they don't stand up on their own and have a multitude of things to catch on things like pedals and handlebars. There is a solution to this bicycle based anarchy however and there are plenty of options on the market deigned to restore order to the pile of bikes in the garage or in our case, the office.

The Hornit Clug is a very simple product that elevates the front wheel of the bike and hold sit vertically, drastically reducing the amount of space a bike takes up. Even better, it means that each bike is supported individually so they don’t lean on each other which can cause damage and makes getting the bike at the bottom of the pile out a logistical challenge.

We’ve got the Clug Roadie and Clug Pro Hybrid on test which are suitable for tyres between 22mm-32mm and 33-42mm wide respectively. There’s a slew of options depending on tyre width, but it’s important the note these measurements are based off the actual tyre width rather than what the tyre is labelled as.

  • Roadie 23mm to 32mm (1 to 1.25in)

  • Hybrid 33mm to 43mm (1.3 to 1.7in)

  • MTB 44mm to 57mm (1.75 to 2.25in)

  • MTB XL 58mm to 69mm (2.3 to 2.7in)

  • Plus 70mm to 81mm (2.7 to 3.2in)

The Clug works by gripping onto the balloon profile of the tyre so doesnt come into contact with the rim which is great for bikes with deep carbon rims that can be damaged by the traditional hooks that are often used.

Installation is very straightforward, the Clug comes with a template for drilling the holes into the wall and then it’s just a case of screwing the Clug into the holes and clipping the inner section into place.

To mount a bike to the Clug, it needs to be tipped up onto the back wheel and then woith a frim push, the front wheel will attach into the Clug with the rear wheel supporting the weight of the bike.

The Difference between the Clug and Clug Pro is that the Pro version has a Fidlock retaining cable that loops through the wheel. As the Clug relies on the balloon shape of the tyre, if the tyre were to go flat then the bike would fall but the Pro version with the cable will prevent this so it’s ideal for longer term storage needs. We found it tricky to engage the Fidlock mechanism when multiple bikes were racked up next to each other but if you’ve only got one bike or have plenty of space to access  the Fidlock dial then this won't be a problem.

Overall, the Clug is a very simple and affordable way to store your bike out of harm's way and it’s made our situation much more organised.
