The Best Jackets for Winter

The long days of summer are drawing to a close and the dark winter nights are on the horizon. This doesn’t mean that it’s time to pack away the outdoor kit though as winter offers even more opportunities for epic adventures. Snow-capped mountains and glorius soft light make winter a magical season in the hills but it can also be a very challenging season. High winds, snow and rain often make conditions tough, but life can be made more comfortable with the right kit.

Best for winter hillwalking

Montane Phase Pro Shell

£475 | Buy from Trekitt

The Montane Phase Pro Shell packs a three layer Gore Tex Pro membrane which delivers guaranteed waterproof protection and outstanding breathability in the harshest of conditions. The 40d face fabric means it’s tough enough to handle everything from technical alpine ascents to walking the dog.

A fully adjustable hood with a unique quick release system makes getting the perfect fit dialled in a cinch and a stiffened peak directs rain and snow away from the face.

A two way Aquaguard YKK zipper further helps to keep weather out and adjustable cuffs prevent blasts  of chilly air or snow when reaching for holds above the head.

Haglöfs Spitz GTX Pro

£550 | Buy from Trekitt

For those looking for ultimate protection in the harshest of conditions, it’s hard to beat the Haglofs Spitz GTX Pro. Packed with features to keep you protected throughout the harshest winter conditons, it’s ideal for mountaineering, ski touring and alpinism. Constructed form Gore Tex Pro, the PFC free fabrics are mapped across the torso depending on whether abrasion resistance, breathability or freedom of movement are key which results in a shell that excels. Tougher fabrics are used on high abrasion areas to increase the lifespan of the shell.

A RECCO avalanche rescue reflector is integrated into the hood should the worst happen and allows rescue crews to find you more easily when buried under snow. Plenty of pockets and adjustable cuffs and hood mean you can dial in the fit easily.

Best for mountain adventures

Tierra Västra Jacket

£360 | Buy from Trekitt

The Tierra Vastra shell jacket uses a sustainable version of Gore Tex, ePE which stands for expanded polyethylene which has a reduced carbon footprint but still maintains the excellent waterproof and breathable properties Gore Tex has become renown for. In the past, waterproof membranes have incorporated PFC’s which do not break down at all and cause lasting damage to ecosystems so this new breed of Gore Tex goes some way to mitigating the environmental impact.

The Vastra has a fully adjustable, helmet compatible hood that provides full protection from the elements. Two large hand pockets means there’s plenty of space for snacks, map and GPS; on the left sleeve there is a ski pass pocket for easy access.

 Best for cold temperatures

Rab Mythic G Jacket

£420 | Buy from Trekitt

A waterproof jacket is only the outer shell of a winter layering system; to keep warm, an insulating layer is needed and they don’t come much better than the Rab Mythic Ultra down jacket.

Packed with 900 fill power RDS Certified Goose down, it offers an unappareled warm to weight ratio. The down is treated with a Nikwax hydrophobic coating which adds a lightly waterproof coating to the down. The 10d outer shell creates a jacket that feels soft and comfortable to the touch whilst being durable yet insulating.

The jacket is very lightweight yet packs a huge amount of warmth so is perfect for fast and light adventures in the mountains.

 Best for city-to-nature

Fjällräven Nuuk Lite Parka

£450 | Buy from Trekitt

Not every winter adventure needs to involve mountains, sometimes it’s in a more urban environment. The Fjällräven Nuuk Lite Parka is designed for milder conditions and shoulder seasons; this Lite version is based off the fully fledged Nuuk Parka but in a slightly lighter construction.

The recycled polyamide outer is durable to withstand scrapes and bumps of everyday life and uses a waterproof membrane for complete protection. Insulation is courtesy of Fjällräven’s own synthetic design which is specifically designed for warmth even in damp conditions.

Plenty of pockets means there’s loads of space to keep possessions and shelter cold hands when the temperatures plummet and the faux fur hood protects further against the wind and rain.
